NakedGJ:
We know the science behind the ‘how’ that makes your success happen

When you work in a fast moving industry it seems that no matter how up to date your skills are, there is always something else to learn. Training, extra courses, home study, workshops, seminars… the list is endless.
It is made worse by the current economic situation where there is both the fear of having obsolete skills and also the requirement to cross train into other areas. If you are successful with many years of expert experience, the whole thought of cross training can leave you anxious and worried.
Being out of your depth – your comfort zone, raises stress levels that make learning an unpleasant experience. Having to be tested on your new knowledge, in areas that seem alien to you is threatening; especially when your job or promotion may rely on you passing the exams and failure is not an option. You are aware of the competition and you worry about the consequences of not being successful.
If you are the kind of person for whom examinations have always been nerve-racking, this whole process can turn into an ordeal.
When learning is seen as a battle with yourself, other factors also come into play. The sheer effort that you have to put into psyching yourself up; the internalised conflicts, the panic, the stress, all take their toll.
Even when you are in the learning zone, you are aware that your mind finds ways to distract you from the task in hand. Everything takes longer than it should and way more effort than it needs to. You still have to work, do the job you are paid to do, but the extra time spent in the learning zone battling yourself, is taken out of your precious private life, which suffers even more when you take your stress home with you.
Throughout school people said you were bright, that you had a good future, that you ‘could make something’ of your life. Yes, you earn money now, and though you are making ‘something of your life’, you know that you could do more, much more.
But every time you try and take a step in that direction, every time you even try, you find a reason not to. ‘I’m not clever enough’, ‘people will laugh at me’, and ‘I’ll fail’, thoughts that stop you dead in your tracks.
Perhaps, no one in your family ever went to College, let alone University, ever studied beyond school and to do so would alienate you from them – so you believe. You can hear them now ‘big head’, ‘brain box’, or worse the insult that somehow you’ve ‘forgotten your roots’. But at the same time you want to get on, you know you can do better - so much better in fact, that every day you feel more stuck in your dead end, stifling job.
Sometimes what gets to you is more than the fear of what others will think. You doubt your abilities, ‘Why would they take me - I’m not the right type’, ‘they will laugh at me’, ‘I can’t do exams – I hate exams’, ‘why do I have to prove myself?’. The frustration of these unanswered thoughts prevents you making any decisions – you desperately want to try something new, but every time you even begin to make an effort, some reason gets in the way.
You’ve been in your job a long time – people joke with you about it, ‘fixtures and fittings’ they call you and sometimes you laugh with them, but other times you don’t. You see younger people come and go – all ‘fired up’ with their management techniques and their spreadsheet approach to getting the job done, yet you’re the one who knows the job inside out.
You teach them, yet they move on, take your knowledge, your skills and then leave you behind, or worse, they stay and then bully you and tell you how to do the job ‘properly’. You know your industry, you know your job inside out and you’ve got so many of the skills that you need to progress, but still you don’t. The worst thing is that you know the reason why: ‘Formal qualifications’.
Formal Qualifications: the two words that leave you numb; words that mean exams, studying, proving yourself – the solid wall between you and your success. ‘I’m not good enough’, ‘my teachers said I was thick’, ‘I can’t take exams’, I’m too old’, ‘my memory’s rubbish’, ‘I’m not clever enough’, ‘what if I fail?’
You feel it eating away at your self confidence, but the mere thought of exams stresses you, makes you feel uncomfortable and afraid. It’s got to the stage that every time you even think about it, it creates a sickening feeling and panic sets in. It’s like adding extra weight to a burden already pressing down on you.
It happens to many people. You took responsibility at an early age and for whatever reason, you were not able to pursue your education. A life of plans and aspirations cut short by the unexpected.
Perhaps you’re the teen mum whose kids have now grown up and left home, maybe you’re the young lad who years ago had to take your place as the breadwinner, or even became a dad at an early age and chose to take responsibility for your family, now grown up and in a dead-end job. It could be that you just wanted early financial independence and for a few years you were better off than those who stayed on, but now you realise there is a ceiling preventing your promotion. Maybe you never had the opportunity to follow your true passion, but now you have the opportunity, you are not sure that you can do it.
It’s almost as if this other side of life has passed you by and though you really want to learn something new – something that you have passion for; now that the opportunity is there, you are wondering if you missed the boat. Maybe it’s gone for good and all you are left with is the ‘what if?’ question. It’s not that you have regrets about your life; it’s just that you want more and you don’t know if you can ever have it.
‘Is learning always for the young?’, ‘can I learn new skills now I’m older?’, ‘what about my memory – it’s not what it was?’, ‘am I clever enough?’
You have so many thoughts, worries and self doubts that prevent you getting on the next boat to take you to your dream destination.
