NakedGJ: Bulimia

Bulimia – some surprising statistics

Bulimia is a medical condition affecting the lives of both men and women. It is estimated that that about 1 in 400 males and 1 in 50 females experience Bulimia.

It is characterised by recurrent episodes of binge eating and compensatory behaviours, such as vomiting, purging, fasting, excessive exercise, the misuse of laxatives, diuretics, Amphetamines, Thyroxine and other prescription medicines.

My body, my image, my control

As with Anorexia, the main preoccupation is with weight and body image and in some cases those with Anorexia go on to develop Bulimia.

Often Bulimia can go unnoticed for many years.

Outwardly there may be no physical signs or changes in appearance and many people don’t discuss their condition with anyone, let alone medical professionals.

The Triggers

Bulimia develops for many reasons and there are many triggers. It might have started gradually with just occasional episodes of binge eating and moderate compensatory behaviours – as a means to “hurry along” the process of weight loss.

Perhaps failed diets then drew you to more severe weight controlling measures. During the day you might have managed to “stick” to your diet, but come the evening you lost control of your eating and then binged.

The sense of disgust and revulsion that you felt at what you had done, of not being in control of your eating, forced you into methods of drastic compensation.

Maybe you are addicted to eating, the basic human instinct to feel full and satisfied, yet at the same time you don’t want to gain weight.

Perhaps for you, eating was the only pleasurable activity in your life and it provided comfort and security when all around you was uncertainty.

The initial trigger for your Bulimia might have been a severe difficulty in your relationships with friends or family.

It might have been that you received unwanted advances, or had difficult social or sexual experiences, or personal criticisms and comments may have left you disgusted with your body.

You may have felt different to your peer group and that your identity was not respected. You may have feared rejection and isolation or just felt that in some way you were a “misfit”.

It might be that growing up itself was difficult and unacceptable to you and your changing body shape and body image created conflicts and was the trigger for the start of Bulimia.

It may have been the only escape mechanism you had available within the confines of an abusive family.

The obsessive thinking and patterns of behaviour associated with Bulimia may extend into other areas of your life, triggering Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, self harming behaviours and other abusing tendencies.

Habits are often a pattern of behaviour that are triggered by similar events. In order to be free from Bulimia it is crucial to resolve the root cause and the triggering events.

My unpalatable secret

Bulimia causes great internal conflict. It can be very destructive and lead you to have very negative thoughts, feelings and emotions and you experience unpredictable and uncontrollable mood swings.

The sense of disgust and self loathing and the cycles of guilt and shame you go through can undermine your sense of self worth, confidence and self esteem.

Your poor self image can be made worse by the added physical symptoms; tooth decay, hair loss, poor complexion and other changes to your appearance reinforce your poor internal perceptions and compound your sense of failure.

At times it can feel that there is no escape from the vicious circle of Bulimia - food and diet has become the centre of a real battle that you wage, day in and day out. Like all battles it takes great strategy, skill and effort. This in itself may make you feel deceitful and guilty, that it has to take place in secret.

It may involve lying, making excuses about eating with others; it may alter your social life and even your family life. You may have to hide your laxatives or even your “secret stash” of food where people can’t find them and you may already have your excuses prepared just in case they’re found, or you are caught vomiting.

Work life can become difficult. You may fear being found out and the stigma of having an “eating disorder” is one that causes you great anxiety. You may never eat at work, for fear of not being able to stop eating, of shaming yourself in public – the shame would be too great, the loss of respect too embarrassing.

You may fear the implications for your career – word gets around and you fear forever being labelled or deemed unstable and therefore unsuitable for promotion.

Sometimes you wish you were found out, that it could all come out into the open. Maybe it would relieve this great burden of secrecy and alleviate your sense of suffering. But then you wonder - how can anyone understand “what I’m going through”?

At times you can barely understand it yourself, how can someone else? “If I feel disgusted with myself, what are others going to think?”, “How do I even begin talking about it?” You can fear harsh judgements or rejection, or worse that they are going to pressurise you into stopping. “Who can I trust?”

You may have been experiencing Bulimia for years without any obvious physical symptoms.

You may fear becoming ill or maybe you are already diagnosed with a serious illness and you blame yourself for causing it.

You may wonder...

“Am I being punished - after all I did abuse my body …?”

Breaking Free from Bulimia

Bulimia, just like Anorexia is an evolving and dynamic condition whose impact upon your life varies as your life changes.

It is a chronic condition that can be extremely addictive and though it may satisfy some needs within you, such as perfectionism, its overall impact upon many aspects of your life is damaging.

Many people with Bulimia suffer secretly for years before finding suitable or appropriate help. Wherever you are in the cycle of your life and your Bulimia, you can break free once and for all.
