There is some fantastic news about Cancer survivors and cure. Over the last twenty years, the overall rate for Cancer survival has increased.
Now, new data from a long running study of Cancer survival in Europe has shown that the number of people cured of Cancer, rather than just surviving for at least five years after diagnosis, is rising steadily click here.
Though the news is good, there is still much to be done to meet the needs of both long term Cancer survivors and those cured of Cancer.
Too often, long term Cancer survivors do not receive the necessary treatments that they require to help them live with the consequences of Cancer.
This lack of support for cancer survivors results in a poorer quality of life. In fact, for some cancer survivors life can be very limited.
Everyone has their own unique story to describe the moment they became a cancer survivor. Some talk of a profound sense of relief, others, the sense of elation of a “new lease of life”. For some cancer survivors, this moment is the “green light” to start moving their lives forward again.
Some cancer survivors never look back, striving to put cancer firmly behind them, but for others the light never goes green and they are constantly stuck on an “amber alert”.
For other cancer survivors, even when the light goes green, their foot is still firmly on the brake. They feel that life is passing them by and they are constantly held back by past events, traumas and issues.
For another group of cancer survivors, the new start is a stuttering series of start-stops – a life never getting out of first gear.
A leading Professor of Palliative care says;
“...These patients exist in limbo. They fall between two stools: they have finished being treated by Oncologists, but are not receiving the care and support from Palliative care teams, that patients at the end of life receive. Yet, the impact of Cancer and Cancer treatment on the very long term health of survivors is substantial and many of them remain very symptomatic, with poor quality of life.” click here.
For long term Cancer survivors, the lack of physical care and symptom management is compounded by a lack of mental, emotional, psychological and social support. This has far reaching consequences for their quality of life.
Long term medical and psychological effects of Cancer many cause impairments that affect social functioning. For example, people who survive Cancer have been reported to be more likely to be unemployed click here.
Sometimes it can seem very confusing. You may experience mood swings, anger and frustrations without really knowing why. Other times, you may feel insecure and vulnerable in areas where once you were very confident. Both your self image and your body image can change. Your relationships can change and sometimes you may find it difficult to make new ones. Socially you may feel isolated or “different”.
You may feel guilty that you survived whilst other people you know with cancer did not. You may constantly question when your luck is going to run out. You may have nightmares, worries, fears and anxieties and not know what to do with any of your thoughts and feelings.
Thoughts can be buried, only to resurface later and emotions can erupt at the slightest thing. Your experiences can continue for many years and they may seem to have no ending.
Long term survivors of adult Cancers have been reported to be almost twice as likely to report psychological distress severe enough to cause moderate to serious problems functioning in social, work or school situations, when compared to the general populationclick here.
In this study, individuals with severe psychological distress were identified based on how frequently they felt nervous, restless, hopeless, worthless and that everything was an effort.
Their findings also showed that younger long term Cancer survivors, those less that 65 years old were more likely to experience severe psychological distress and that there was no difference in the number of years since the Cancer diagnoses and the increased risk of distress.

The importance of the mind-body connection for surviving Cancer with a higher quality of life has been well established.
Even something as simple as phone counselling intervention has been shown to improve the quality of life for Cervical Cancer survivors and to alter associated stress related effects on their immune systemclick here.
Reducing stress that accompanies Cancer diagnosis and treatment can have a significant impact upon patient survival.
A new study found that breast Cancer patients who participated in intervention sessions focusing on improving mood, coping effectively and altering health behaviours live longer than patients who do not receive such psychological supportclick here.
