“You are in Remission...”
... A statement taken as one of the first signposts on the road to recovery in your journey through Cancer.
For many, remission is the word for hope; the word that means you can start to breathe again and dare to plan for the future.
But for all the hopes it brings, being in remission comes loaded with a raft of issues that by themselves create great stress and can do great damage.
For it is also a word loaded with emotional resonance and expectation. Though the cancer may no longer be detectable in your body, the effects of cancer are still very much alive in your mind.
During treatment, all your energy was spent coping with the physical aspects of the cancer. Now the immediate physical threat is gone, your mind seems to play havoc with your emotions. You may have been strong for the sake of others, yet deep down inside you don’t feel strong for yourself.
Anger, frustrations, negative thoughts and nightmares that were pushed into the background, are now at the forefront of your mind. You don’t seem to be able to quieten the noise – all the unanswered questions, images and “what ifs”.
It is as though the whole framing of remission is loaded against you. Remission: the fear of cancer coming back, the fear of it returning. What is said in hope soon becomes the anxiety of recurrence.
For many, living in remission is living with the constant fear and dread of cancer returning. For as much hope and optimism that being in remission brings, it also brings a whole suite of negatively charged thoughts and emotions.
Has it gone? Will it come back? Am I free from it?
Many people count the months and days...
...each day brings gratitude and thanks that you are still alive, yet each day ratchets up the anxiety a little higher;
“only six months to go” … “only three weeks to go”
Yet you feel so guilty.
After all, you should feel so grateful. Physically you are “doing well”, yet mentally you feel like a passenger in your own life, that cancer is following you like a shadow.
Staying realistic is important and there is always the possibility that Cancer may return, but there is a balance between realism and heightened fear. Rather than the death sentence that Cancer once perceived to be, the excess fear has turned it into a suspended sentence.
In remission, you live your life looking over your shoulder, living with the constant worry, waiting for its return.
It is so very damaging, this living in fear of “what if...” It holds you in a vice. You want to live, to be free from it.
You want to leave cancer behind, yet you constantly think about it, forever fearful and always anxious.
Your health is under constant scrutiny and you fear the “signs” of cancer’s return in everything.
Every minor ailment becomes a cause for panic - when you’re tired – is that a sign? When you feel run down – that must be a sign too? Cancer still has you in its grip. Your unrelenting fear of its return is damaging to your health in so many ways. Emotionally, physically and psychologically your remission has become a “jail sentence”.

At The Naked Gene Juggler, we understand that as joyous as remission is, it can leave you struggling with much “unfinished business”.
