Over recent years huge inroads have been made into the treatment of different Cancers and significant resources have been committed to the medical treatment of this disease.
Research into the mind body connection has until recently received less attention and research into this field has lagged behind medical research.
However, recently there has been a heightened awareness that this mind body connection has a direct and significant effect upon the physiological manifestation of the disease.
In recent years the use of Complementary and Alternative Medicines (CAM) has increased significantly. According to the Department of Health, about one in five adults use complementary therapies. They are used by millions who suffer long term conditions for which, despite the best scientific efforts, there are no effective conventional treatments.
It is estimated that one in three people with Cancer use CAM at some stageclick here.
People use CAM for many reasons, ranging from not wanting to take conventional medicines to being more proactive in supporting their conventional treatments.
A significant number of patients use CAM for managing cancer pain and the side effects of their cancer treatment - and some methods have become more acceptable over time.
For example, Acupuncture has been shown to reduce the side effects of Breast Cancer treatment by as much as conventional drug therapiesclick here.
Whilst some medical professionals see CAM as beneficial to patients, others dismiss the effects as Placebo.
Placebo effects one in three patients.
The term “Placebo Effect” usually refers to the helpful effects of Placebo in reducing symptoms. However, it can result in symptoms that can be described as side effects, in which case it is called “Nocebo” affect.
These two types of outcomes are known as “expectation effects”. This means that the person taking the Placebo may experience what he or she expects to happen. If the person expects to feel better, that may happen and if they expect side effects then that may also happen.
A twelve month double blind experiment demonstrates the power of the mind and the placebo affect.
Patients with Parkinson’s disease who thought they had received a transplant of human neurons into their brains (but who really had not), reported an improved quality of life one year later.
What is interesting is that those who thought they received the implant reported better quality of life than those who thought they received the sham surgery, regardless of which surgery they had actually received.
The medical staff who also did not know who had the real surgery, also independently reported more differences and changes at twelve months, based on patient’s perceived treatment, rather than on actual treatmentclick here.
The power of the patient’s belief and expectation of treatment side effects has also been demonstrated.
In a study where 100 men thought they were taking Chemotherapy, when they were actually taking inactive Saline solution, 20% of these men lost their hair, demonstrating that...
...simply believing and expecting hair loss as a side effect was enough to make it happen.
Placebo effects are also used in complementary medicine. For example, sham Acupuncture consists of needles placed at non Acupuncture points.
A recent study has shown that real Acupuncture was no more effective than sham Acupuncture at reducing migraine headaches, although both interventions produced benefits compared with a waiting list controlclick here.
The mechanism by which the placebo effect works is largely unknown, but what is clear is that the patient’s beliefs, expectations and perceived outcomes, have a profound effect on the actual outcome of the illness.
