Cancer Chemo Brain and Chemo Fog at The Naked Gene Juggler

Chemo brain - Cognitive impairment can last a lifetime

For many years Cancer patients have complained about the mental fog known as chemo brain.

As many as 40% of Cancer patients undergoing Chemotherapy complain of symptoms such as short term memory loss and attention deficit and in extreme cases, seizures, vision loss and even Dementia have been mentioned. There have been reports of more than 82% of Breast Cancer patients suffering from some form of cognitive impairment.

Whilst these effects tend to wear off after time, a subset of patients, particularly those who have had high doses of Chemotherapy, experience these cognitive side effects months or even years after treatment has finished and the drugs have long cleared their systems.

Is chemo brain the chicken or the egg?

The frustration of chemo brain in itself creates a heightened level of stress, which in turn hampers your recovery and directly contributes to your chemo fog. What you used to take in your stride has now become a struggle. As for multitasking … a distant memory.

You feel the frustrations in every aspect of your life. It is not just your memory that is not what it used to be, your processing time and reaction times seem so much slower.

Everything takes longer, less gets done and life slows down to a pace just faster than a crawl.

It is a vicious circle: stress is a major contributor to chemo brain and the deeper you become immersed in the fog, the more stressed you become. And so it continues.

Clear the fog of stress and break the vicious circle of chemo brain. Find out how by visiting ourconsulting website, orcontact ustoday to book your consultation.

The blurred perception of the chemo brain

Some common Chemotherapy drugs have been shown to be more toxic to healthy brain cells than the Cancer cells they were intended to treat.

Preliminary results from a small scale study of 10 Breast Cancer patients who had received Chemotherapy and complained of cognitive changes, indicated changes to the brain’s white matter when compared to the control group of 9 healthy women. The authors suggest that Chemotherapy may change the brain and those changes affect the patient's cognitive skillsclick here.

However, a recent study suggests that chemotherapy may not affect memory in Breast Cancer patients, rather the cognitive difficulties experienced by women with a new Breast Cancer diagnosis may be related to stress as a result of diagnosis and other quality of life factors and not simply due to the effects of chemotherapy or radiationclick here.

Stress creates a fog of its own …

The role of stress in cognitive function is well documented. The traumatic impact of Cancer diagnosis and making important life or death decisions could affect cognitive function even before Cancer treatment starts.

Regardless of whether stress is the cause or the contributory factor, it needs to be dealt with. Whilst the choice of Chemotherapy drugs may be limited there are numerous choices available to you when dealing with your stress ( Read our other pages onStress and Stress Related IllnessesandCancer Stress Reduction ).

You can’t choose your chemotherapy drugs, but you can take proactive steps in reducing the impact of stress on your chemo brain. Eliminate the stress and make a clear path in your journey through cancer. Find out how by visiting ourconsulting website, orcontact ustoday to book your consultation.
